Planning for the Future When You Have a Young Family

*This is a collaborative post

When you have children, you are often so busy and so tired that you aren’t really planning for the future. Sometimes it is just about getting through the day, to the next naptime, or the next bedtime. But when you have children, planning for the future is something that is so important.

If the last year and a half has shown us anything, it is that anything can happen and if we’re not too careful and aren’t prepared, things can go wrong or not as we planned them. So with that in mind, here are some of the important things that you need to do for the future, if you have children.

Write a Will

If you have children, then you need to have a will. Many people think that you need to be a homeowner to have a will, but that is not the case. You can purely talk about your children and plans for them in a will, should anything untoward happen. If your plans aren’t clear, then it could mean children going into care rather than relatives, unless you state what you want to happen. It doesn’t take long, and doesn’t cost much, and it can be updated as time goes on. So get a will in place sooner rather than later.

Share thoughts on Funerals

This can vary depending on the age of your children, but would even your partner know what your wishes are when it comes to funerals? Knowing if you want to be buried or cremated can make a difference, as they won’t want to have to guess it, when the time comes. You could also think about small things like working on headstones or grave markers, much like the ones at Print a Plate, as well as thinking about music or other special things that you would like. The hope is that it won’t need to be used for a long time, but knowing your wishes will be best for everyone.

Live within in your Means

By being able to live within your means you will be able to avoid unnecessary debt, which is so important for families with children. You’re never going to be financially free if you are always worrying about clearing debts. When you live within your means you will also have more money to be able to save, which can be important for the future, whether that is getting a bigger home, saving for University, or other things that are needed for children.

Spend as much time with your Children as Possible

When you’re raising a family it can be easy to be distant from your children, just to get some peace and quiet. However, as children get older, they want to spend less and less time with you, so when they are young, spend as much time with them as possible. It can be tempting to work all hours under the sun in order to afford all that you need, but getting the balance between this is really important.
